India Agrees to Participate in Pakistan-Hosted 2027 SAF Games

India has agreed in principle to participate in the 2027 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games hosted by Pakistan after 23 years.

According to reports, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood said India was represented at a high-level meeting of the South Asian Olympic Association and agreed to participate after receiving an invitation.

India is expected to provide details of its contingent in January 2027.

Pakistan will host the 14th SAF Games from April 4 to 11, 2027. The dates were finalized in coordination with the South Asian Olympic Committee during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The Games will feature 28 sports and will be held across Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. Earlier preparations indicated 346 medal events, with around 3,200 athletes expected, while the latest government planning estimates more than 6,000 athletes and officials.

The Pakistan Olympic Association has already started preparations with regional Olympic bodies. India also participated virtually in the South Asia Olympic Council’s August meeting, alongside representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Dar has directed federal and provincial authorities to complete venues on time and ensure strong arrangements for security, accommodation, transportation and other facilities.

Pakistan last hosted the regional Games in Islamabad in 2004. The 2027 edition will therefore mark the country’s return as host after more than two decades.
