Huawei Shows Off Brand New Design for Its Upcoming Tri-Fold Phone

Huawei has revealed the design of the Mate XT 2, and the upcoming tri-fold smartphone looks significantly different from its predecessor.

The biggest change is the folding mechanism. Huawei has replaced the original Mate XT’s Z-shaped fold with a new U-shaped design.

New U-Shaped Folding Design

Official images show a folding pattern similar to Samsung’s tri-fold design, although the panels fold in a slightly different order.

While the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold opens from the left panel, the Huawei Mate XT 2 opens toward the right.

The main advantage of the U-shaped design is better protection for the flexible inner display. When the phone is completely folded, the main foldable screen remains protected inside the device instead of being exposed.

That could be particularly useful considering that replacing the original Mate XT’s foldable display costs a whopping $743.

The Mate XT 2 also features an outer display with a pill-shaped front camera cutout, similar to Huawei’s conventional flagship smartphones.

This suggests the phone could support 3D facial recognition, although Huawei has not confirmed the feature.

On the back, Huawei has retained an octagonal camera module similar to the one used on the previous model.

Kirin 9030S Expected

Huawei is expected to power the Mate XT 2 with the Kirin 9030S, the same chipset used in the Pura X View and previously introduced with the Pura 90 Pro and Pura 90 Pro Max.

The processor features one super core clocked at 2.69GHz, three large cores at 2.15GHz, and four medium cores running at 1.62GHz.

It is paired with a Maleoon 935F GPU running at 933MHz with three compute units.

First Phone With HarmonyOS 7

The Mate XT 2 is also expected to become the first smartphone to ship with HarmonyOS 7.

Huawei’s updated Ark Engine integrates a large model directly into the operating system for the first time. The system has reportedly been trained using more than 2 billion scene-learning data points.

Huawei claims the upgrade can improve performance by another 15%, while keeping annual load growth below 10%.

Huawei has not announced an official launch date for the Mate XT 2 yet. However, with the company now publicly showing its design, a full launch is expected to follow soon.
