Karachi’s well-known Delhi Government School has finally come under judicial custody, with the building in Federal B Area sealed on court orders.
Following the development, the Sindh education department’s Directorate of Education also placed a written notice outside the school, directing students and teachers to contact the district education officer or the directorate.
According to the notice, the school building is being handed over to the Old Boys Association in compliance with court orders.
Delhi Government School was once among Karachi’s most prominent public schools, especially during the 1980s and 1990s, when its students regularly secured top positions in matriculation exams.
If another public school took the first position in a given year, Delhi School would often reclaim it the following year.
The school continued to dominate board results for several years until 1996. However, with the decline of public schools in the mid-1990s, private schools began to take the science group positions. In a surprising development, a student from the same school secured a matric science position in 2024.
The school also had a strong reputation among Karachi’s elite families, who considered admission there a matter of prestige. Admission was highly competitive, and parents often sought influential recommendations to secure seats for their children.
Its teaching staff also enjoyed a distinguished reputation, and transfers to Delhi School were considered an honour among senior teachers of other government schools.
The school became especially famous for its headmaster, widely known as “Shamsi Sahib,” who was recognised for rejecting recommendations from influential circles during admissions.
A former education department official said that when calls from the department informed Shamsi Sahib about admissions recommended by the chief minister’s office, he responded that the chief minister had not spoken to him directly.
He would reportedly say that if someone had sent the request, they should handle the response themselves, and that he would consider it only when it was brought to him personally.
Meanwhile, the school education department has started planning the relocation of students after the building was sealed.
Three government schools currently operate in the same building, including girls’ schools in the morning and evening shifts and a boys’ school in the morning shift.
A senior secondary education director said the school’s total enrolment is around 2,000 and that plans are being prepared to shift these students to nearby government schools.
He also said court orders for handing over the school building to the Old Boys Association had already been issued in 2007.
At that time, public schools were under city governments, and then-city nazim Mustafa Kamal played a role in keeping the school under government control. Students had even opened the lock themselves and entered the school.
Since then, the education department had continued efforts to preserve the school and had regularly paid rent for the building, with the last payment made up to June 2006.
However, the other party never agreed to keep the school building under government control.
