A cybersecurity expert has shared several steps users can take to protect their WhatsApp accounts from hacking and recover access if an account is compromised.
Speaking on ARY News’ Good Morning Pakistan, cyber expert Asif Iqbal said users should focus on preventive measures rather than panic when they face a social media security breach.
He also advised affected users to contact relevant government institutions immediately for help.
Most WhatsApp Hacks Linked to User Negligence
Iqbal said most WhatsApp hacking incidents happen because users are unaware of basic security measures or act carelessly.
Hackers often take advantage of this lack of awareness by using deceptive methods to gain access to accounts.

Iqbal advised users to always enable two-factor authentication on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
This adds an extra layer of protection and can help prevent unauthorized access.

Users should also link an email address to their WhatsApp account.
According to Iqbal, having an email linked can allow users to recover a hacked WhatsApp account within 10 to 15 minutes.

Users can also regain access to WhatsApp through the SIM card registered with the account.
Iqbal said this recovery method may become available around an hour after the hacking incident.

iPhone Users May Need an Android Device
Iqbal said iPhone users who want to recover their account immediately may need to use an Android device.
The Android device can be used to send the required recovery email and complete the recovery process.

Contact Cyber Crime Authorities
Iqbal said government institutions such as the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency have experts who can help resolve account recovery problems.
He said some cases can be handled within 15 to 30 minutes.
Affected users should contact cybercrime authorities quickly instead of panicking.

Save Financial Details Used by Hackers
After gaining control of a WhatsApp account, hackers often message the victim’s contacts and ask for money through Easypaisa or bank transfers.
Iqbal advised users to save any bank account numbers or payment details shared by the hackers.
These details can then be provided to cybercrime agencies, which may use the financial transactions to trace those responsible.
