Government Buildings to be Turned into Hotels

The prime minister has directed that some government buildings in Islamabad be converted into hotels to address the shortage of world-class accommodation for international events in the federal capital.

To implement the decision, a three-member ministerial committee has been formed. The committee includes the interior, finance and housing ministers.

In the first phase, Shahid-e-Millat Building has been proposed for conversion into a five-star hotel. Sources said consultations are under way on the plan, which will be reviewed by the ministerial committee.

The building covers 4,400 square yards and has the capacity for 128 rooms. Sources also said there is potential to develop 64 luxury suites in the structure.

The move comes as Islamabad is expected to need thousands of additional rooms for the upcoming SCO event, with more than 4,000 hotel rooms required in the city.
