A popular US blueberry muffin product has come under fire after details of its ingredients emerged online, including artificial food colors and petroleum-derived chemicals, international media reported earlier.
The product, Thomas’ Blueberry English Muffins, contains ingredients including Blue 1 Lake, Blue 2 Lake, and Red 40 Lake, synthetic food dyes derived from petroleum-based chemicals. These dyes have been under review in the United States to reduce certain artificial colors in food products.
The muffins also contain sucralose, an artificial sweetener that has faced debate among health experts regarding its use, particularly in children’s diets.
Social media posts have revealed that the product contains 22 listed ingredients, including preservatives, gums, soybean oil, and artificial colors. Many social media users have questioned why a blueberry product contains multiple added colors, while the company in official remarks claimed that its products are made using quality ingredients.
The “blueberry” component comes from dried blueberry pieces listed among the ingredients, along with other components used for flavor, texture, preservation, and appearance.
Thomas’ English Muffins are produced by Bimbo Bakeries USA, part of global bakery company Bimbo. The product’s ingredient profile has gained attention online, regardless of the name.
