International footballer Faiq Bolkiah, widely regarded as the world’s richest footballer, has become a free agent after his contract with Thai League 1 side Ratchaburi FC expired.
The 28-year-old Bruneian winger remains committed to pursuing a professional football career despite coming from a royal family with an estimated fortune of more than $20 billion.
Bolkiah’s wealth dwarfs that of even the sport’s biggest stars. Forbes currently estimates Cristiano Ronaldo’s net worth at around $1.2 billion and Lionel Messi’s at $1.1 billion, making Bolkiah’s reported family fortune many times larger than the personal wealth of either superstar.
Bolkiah is the son of Prince Jefri Bolkiah and nephew of Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Despite his privileged background, he has spent much of his life pursuing football professionally.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in England, Bolkiah came through the youth systems of Southampton, Chelsea, and Leicester City before moving into senior football with Portuguese club Maritimo.
He later moved to Southeast Asia, spending two seasons at Chonburi FC before joining Ratchaburi in 2023. He made 23 appearances for the club and scored two goals.
Bolkiah has also represented Brunei at international level and captains his country. With his Ratchaburi contract now expired, he is assessing opportunities with clubs in other leagues as he looks to continue his football career.
