University College London Offers Fully-Funded PhD on Extreme European Hail Events

University College London (UCL) is offering a fully funded PhD studentship for 2027 focused on statistical modelling of extreme hail events across Europe.

The project, titled “Statistical Models for Extreme European Hail Events with Challenging Data Structures,” will examine uncertainty and risk linked to severe hail events through advanced statistical methods.

The studentship forms part of the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Understanding Uncertainty to Reduce Climate Risks (UNRISK) and will be based in UCL’s Department of Statistical Science.

Applications will close on January 13, 2027, while the PhD is expected to begin in October 2027.

What Will the PhD Focus On

The research will study extreme European hail events and the statistical challenges that arise when researchers work with complex or limited datasets.

Extreme hail can cause significant damage, but estimating the probability and severity of rare events is difficult because available data may have complex structures.

The researcher will develop and apply statistical methods to better understand these events and measure the uncertainty surrounding climate-related hail risks.

Statistical Modelling and Climate Risk

A major part of the project will focus on advanced statistical modelling. The researcher will examine how different data structures influence estimates of rare hail events and how uncertainty affects climate-risk assessments.

The work will contribute to broader research on how scientists can better quantify uncertainty when studying severe and infrequent weather hazards.

Part of the UNRISK Program

The PhD sits within the UNRISK Centre for Doctoral Training, which focuses on improving understanding of uncertainty in climate-related risks.

UNRISK provides multidisciplinary training in climate science, data science, and decision science.

Students can also discuss the advertised project with their supervisors and develop parts of the research within the wider project framework.

Who Can Apply

This studentship is for candidates interested in statistical science, climate risk, extreme weather, quantitative methods, and data analysis. The scholarship information lists a GPA of 3.3.

International applicants, including candidates from Pakistan, are eligible to apply. Applicants should also meet the academic and admission requirements applicable to the PhD project.

English Language Requirements

English Test Minimum Score
IELTS 6.5
TOEFL iBT 92
PTE Academic 59
Cambridge C1 Advanced 176
Cambridge C2 Proficiency 176

Funding Benefits

The studentship covers tuition fees and provides a living allowance for the successful candidate. It also includes a £6,000 research grant to support research and training activities.

The wider UNRISK program will also provide training across climate science, statistics, data science, and decision-making under uncertainty.

Documents Required

Applicants should prepare their academic and supporting documents before submitting an application.

The listed requirements include academic transcripts, degree certificates, an essay or supporting statement, and one to two recommendation letters.

Additional documents may be required depending on the final admission and project requirements.

Research Opportunities

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on statistical methods for extreme European hail events while developing skills in climate-risk analysis.

The project will also allow the researcher to study how uncertainty affects estimates of rare weather hazards and how improved statistical methods can support climate-risk research.

Through UNRISK, the candidate will receive training across several disciplines and will be able to develop the project further in consultation with the supervisors.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must complete the required online application process for the PhD studentship.
Applicants should prepare their academic records, degree documents, supporting statement, and recommendation details before applying.

The deadline to apply is January 13, 2027, and the successful candidate is expected to begin the PhD in October 2027.
