Study at University of Birmingham and Earn £20,000 Annually
Pakistani students interested in materials science, mechanical engineering, and advanced manufacturing can apply for a PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
The 3.5-year research project focuses on additively manufactured architected metamaterials for high-temperature applications. Successful students can receive a stipend of around £20,000 per year.
The project accepts applications from students worldwide, including Pakistanis. However, international applicants should note that the funding covers the stipend and only the UK home-fee portion of tuition. It does not cover the full overseas tuition fee.

What is the PhD About
The PhD focuses on developing lightweight architected nickel-based superalloys that can operate in high-temperature environments.
Nickel superalloys offer strong mechanical performance, thermal stability, and oxidation resistance. However, their relatively high density can limit their use in applications where reducing weight is important.
The research aims to address this problem by designing, manufacturing, and testing ultra-lightweight hollow architected alloys.
Researchers will use additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, to create complex structures for high-temperature applications.
Potential applications include aerospace, space exploration, transport, and other sectors that require materials capable of operating under demanding conditions.
How Much Funding is Available
The studentship lasts 3.5 years and provides a stipend of around £20,000 per year. For UK students, the funding covers home tuition fees in addition to the stipend.
International students can also receive the annual stipend. However, the studentship only contributes an amount equivalent to the UK home tuition fee toward their fees.
It does not cover the full overseas tuition fee for international students. Pakistani applicants would therefore need another source of funding to cover any difference between the international tuition fee and the home-fee contribution.
For this reason, international applicants should not consider the opportunity a fully funded PhD unless they have additional funding for the remaining overseas tuition costs.
Is Previous Research Experience Required?
The University does not require applicants to have previous experimental or modelling experience for this project. However, previous experience in certain areas can strengthen an application.
These include additive manufacturing, materials characterisation, powder metallurgy and computational or materials modelling.
The project therefore remains open to candidates who have a strong academic background but have not previously worked directly in these areas.
English Language Requirements
International students must also meet the University of Birmingham’s English-language requirements.
The current Metallurgy and Materials PhD course page lists an IELTS requirement of 6.0 overall, with no individual component below 5.5, or an accepted equivalent qualification.
The University also accepts other recognised English-language tests subject to its applicable score requirements.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should first contact the project supervisor, Dr Yuanbo (Tony) Tang, to express their interest in the PhD studentship.
Applicants should send a brief covering email explaining why they want to join the project and how their academic background matches the research area. They should attach an updated CV and copies of their academic transcripts.
The current project listing does not require two recommendation letters at this initial stage. However, applicants who move forward may need to complete the University of Birmingham’s formal postgraduate research application and submit any additional documents requested by the university.
International applicants should also check the university’s admission, English-language, and visa-related requirements before completing the formal application.
