Snap has introduced Specs Intelligence, a new standalone AI service that will play a central role in its redesigned AR glasses.
Unlike Snapchat’s existing generative AI features, Specs Intelligence operates separately from the social media app and will also be available through dedicated desktop and mobile apps for users who do not own the glasses.
Built Around Goals, Routines and Connected Accounts
Snap describes Specs Intelligence as an “anticipatory AI service” rather than an agent or traditional assistant.
The service builds an understanding of a user’s goals, priorities, relationships, and routines based on the apps and tools they choose to connect.
It can connect to external accounts such as Google and use that information to surface relevant reminders and context.
For example, Specs Intelligence could show questions to ask and things to remember before a meeting, or display travel plans ahead of an upcoming trip.
It can also organize information into separate “corners” based on context, keeping personal tasks such as family-related reminders separate from work deadlines.
Integration With Snap’s AR Glasses
Users with Snap’s AR Specs will be able to access Specs Intelligence directly through the glasses.
The AI can surface relevant information within the wearer’s field of view.
Users will also be able to interact with the system using the “Hey Specs” voice command.
During Engadget’s demonstration, the full assistant functionality was not yet available, although the voice command could be used to open a browser window.
Snap Highlights Privacy
Snap is also emphasizing privacy as part of the new service.
The company says it will not use Specs Intelligence data to train its AI models or serve advertisements.
Snap also says its employees cannot view or access the personal content users provide to the service.
Limited Preview Starts in the US
Snap is making a limited version of Specs Intelligence available in the United States through the Specs app on iOS.
The preview lets users connect their Google accounts and view insights about where they spend their time and attention.
However, this version will not include proactive suggestions.
The full early-access version will initially be invite-only and available through the Specs Mac app.
Users interested in trying it can join the waitlist.
