Samsung Galaxy Z Fold9 Could Bring Back a Feature Missing for Two Years
Samsung is reportedly planning to bring back the under-display selfie camera with the Galaxy Z Fold9, allowing users to enjoy the phone’s large inner screen without a visible camera cutout.
According to a new leak, the upcoming foldable smartphone could also feature major internal improvements while keeping a design similar to its predecessor.
The Galaxy Z Fold9 is expected to arrive in 2027, although Samsung has not officially confirmed the device or its features.
Samsung Could Bring Back Its Hidden Selfie Camera
Samsung first introduced an under-display selfie camera with the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021.
The technology places the camera underneath the screen, making it less noticeable when users are watching videos, playing games, or reading.
Samsung continued using this camera design through the Galaxy Z Fold6. However, the company switched back to a traditional punch-hole camera with the Galaxy Z Fold7 in 2025.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also use visible selfie camera cutouts on their inner displays.
According to tipster @kro_roe on X, Samsung could reverse that decision with its next-generation foldable.
The source claims that Samsung is preparing a device featuring an under-display camera, along with major changes to its internal hardware.
However, the exact camera specifications remain unknown.
It’s coming next year. I’m calling it a year ahead of everyone else: Samsung will unveil a device with UDC, major internal changes, and minimal changes to its overall thickness and design. https://t.co/wxJ6XigTAa

Galaxy Z Fold9 Could Also Become Much Thinner
Earlier this month, the same tipster claimed that Samsung had already started developing the Galaxy Z Fold9.
According to the leak, the company is targeting a thickness of just 3.9mm when the phone is unfolded and 7.9mm when folded.
For comparison, the wide Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.7mm when folded.
If the rumored measurements are accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold9 would be 0.6mm thinner when opened and 1.8mm thinner when closed.
However, there is some uncertainty surrounding these figures.
The latest leak suggests Samsung is planning minimal changes to the phone’s overall thickness and design, which does not fully match the earlier claim of a noticeably thinner device.
It is possible that the reported dimensions are early development targets or refer to another version of the Galaxy Z Fold9.
Samsung Preparing to Compete With Apple’s Foldable
The tipster also claims Samsung is developing the Galaxy Z Fold9 as a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone Duo.
Apple’s first foldable smartphone features a 4MP under-display selfie camera on its inner screen.
Samsung’s reported decision to bring back the technology could help it offer a similar viewing experience without a visible camera hole.
However, an under-display camera can also present challenges for image quality because it must capture light through the display.
Samsung has not revealed whether it has developed an improved version of the technology for its next foldable.
Expected Launch Date
Samsung has not announced a launch date for the Galaxy Z Fold9.
Based on the company’s usual release schedule, the device could arrive in the second half of 2027.
There is also no confirmed information about its processor, battery, cameras, display sizes, or pricing.
For now, the under-display camera and thinner design remain unconfirmed rumors from a single source.
More details are likely to emerge as Samsung moves further into the development of its next-generation foldable smartphones.
