The Department of Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education, Punjab, has asked the Inter-Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) to review the equivalence criteria for Cambridge qualifications used in medical college admissions.
The department has written to the Executive Director of IBCC, highlighting concerns that the existing system may place O and A Level students at a disadvantage compared to those coming through the traditional Matriculation and FSc system.
Under the current admission criteria, merit for medical colleges is calculated by combining marks obtained in Matriculation/FSc or equivalent qualifications with the MDCAT score.
However, differences in the grading and equivalence systems can result in a significant gap between students who achieve exceptionally high grades in the Cambridge system and those who secure high marks in FSc.
As a result, even Cambridge students who obtain the highest possible grades in O and A Levels may find themselves at a comparative disadvantage in the highly competitive medical college admission process.
The Punjab government has therefore sought a review of the existing equivalence criteria to address concerns surrounding the treatment of Cambridge qualifications in medical admissions.
