Punjab Bans Several Items in Schools, Colleges and Universities

The Punjab government has banned the sale of several drinks, food items, and tobacco products in educational institutions under amended food quality regulations for canteens and cafeterias.

The prohibited items include carbonated drinks, energy drinks, artificial beverages, and products containing monosodium glutamate (MSG), commonly known as Chinese salt.

Cotton candy, gola ganda, ice lollies, tobacco products, and vapes are also covered by the ban.

Published in the Punjab Gazette, the amended regulations apply to schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions throughout the province.

The rules introduce a three-category system which are green, yellow, and red to classify food items according to their nutritional value. Nutritious foods fall under the green category.

The changes aim to encourage healthier eating habits among students and discourage the sale of products with low nutritional value.

The requirements also extend beyond campus boundaries. Food businesses operating within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions must comply with the amended regulations.

This means nearby food outlets, as well as on-campus canteens and cafeterias, will be subject to the new requirements.
