The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) can now conduct inspections of premises linked to telecommunication equipment without prior notice under the newly notified Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, 2024.
The regulations allow a PTA-authorized officer to visit the premises of licensees, manufacturers, and importers to check whether telecom equipment meets required technical, safety, and performance standards.
The inspection powers cover equipment that is imported, manufactured or assembled in Pakistan.
During an inspection, an authorized PTA officer can examine telecommunication equipment at the premises. The officer can also require the concerned company or organization to provide relevant records and documents.
The regulations require licensees, manufacturers and importers to cooperate with PTA inspections and provide the information requested by the authority.
They must also maintain updated records of their telecommunication equipment for at least three years. These records must be made available to PTA when required for inspection or compliance checks.
Equipment Covered by the Regulations
The inspection framework covers a broad range of telecom equipment. This includes mobile devices, base stations, wireless systems, satellite communication equipment, optical equipment, and other telecommunications infrastructure.
The regulations were notified through SRO 1110(I)/2026 under Section 28 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996.
The new inspection powers form part of the regulatory framework for checking whether telecom equipment operating in Pakistan meets the technical and safety requirements set by the PTA.
