Petition Filed Against 10-Day Basant
The Lahore High Court is set to hear a petition seeking to restrict Punjab’s planned Basant celebrations in 2027 to a single day instead of the announced 10-day period.
Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry will take up the petition filed by citizen Shahid Islam after the registrar’s office scheduled it for hearing.
The petitioner has challenged the government’s decision to allow celebrations from January 29 to February 7, asking the court to declare the announcement invalid.
His petition argues that extending kite-flying festivities over 10 days would expose residents to greater safety risks. It cites injuries caused by sharp kite strings, electric shocks and falls from rooftops, while claiming that 17 people died during Basant celebrations in 2026. That figure is an allegation in the petition, not a finding by the court.
Islam also contends that prolonged celebrations would increase noise, environmental pollution and accidents, infringing on citizens’ fundamental rights.
The Punjab government and senior provincial officials, including the chief secretary, home secretary, deputy commissioner, inspector general of police and Lahore’s capital city police officer, have been named as respondents.
Additional Advocate General Khawaja Mohsin Abbas will represent the provincial government and is expected to challenge whether the petition is maintainable.
