Pakistani boxer Abida Batool has made history by winning the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) world atomweight title after defeating Thailand’s Wandee Sinongkhrot in Pattaya.
The 26-year-old boxer from Quetta secured the vacant title through a split technical decision on October 31 at FCC Stadium during the “Brave Hearts” boxing event.
The scheduled eight-round fight was stopped in the fifth round following an accidental headbutt, which left Batool with a fractured nose.
The ringside doctor called off the contest, sending the result to the judges’ scorecards. Two judges scored the fight 50-45 and 49-48 in Batool’s favor, while the third awarded it 48-47 to Sinongkhrot.
With the victory, Batool became the first Pakistani woman to win a WIBA world title, marking a major milestone in her professional boxing career.
This was Batool’s second title fight in Thailand this year. In January, she challenged Wisuta Sririttidet for the WBC Asia atomweight title in Bangkok but was unsuccessful.
Before her latest victory, Batool was already ranked Pakistan’s top female professional boxer and third in the WBC Asia rankings. Her world title win is expected to further improve her international standing.
Batool began her boxing career in 2018 and previously won Pakistan’s national professional boxing title. She has also competed in mixed martial arts, wushu, and kickboxing, earning medals in national and international competitions.
Her journey has been marked by financial difficulties and initial resistance from her family. Despite these challenges, she continued training and pursuing her boxing career, preparing extensively in Islamabad before traveling to Thailand.
Following her victory, Batool thanked her family, coach Shariq Khan, and the people of Pakistan for their support.
Reflecting on her victory, Batool said, “This is just the beginning. I’m coming for more titles.”
