OpenAI Is Turning ChatGPT Into a More Interactive Interface
OpenAI is rolling out a new Intelligent UI feature for ChatGPT alongside the new GPT-6 model, bringing significantly more visual and interactive elements into conversations.
The update begins rolling out on Wednesday and is designed to make ChatGPT less dependent on text-only responses.
Interactive Elements Inside ChatGPT
OpenAI says many of the new visuals will be interactive rather than static images.
Responses may include elements such as tappable buttons, task-specific calculators, interactive charts, editable graphs, diagrams, maps, and other controls that users can work with directly.
The company says the main goal is to make complex topics easier to understand.
OpenAI Shows How It Works
During a demonstration for journalists, OpenAI showed ChatGPT generating diagrams and other visual elements almost instantly to explain abstract subjects.
OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan said ChatGPT has largely been a text-based interface, but many useful answers work better when they include more than text.
He pointed to tasks such as planning recipes or trips and learning new subjects.
In one example, Selvan asked ChatGPT to “explore how an airplane wing generates lift.” ChatGPT then generated several diagrams showing how an aircraft remains in the air.
OpenAI also demonstrated visuals for recipes, bicycle mechanics, multi-day hiking routes, and personal savings calculations.
Users Can Reduce the Number of Visuals
Intelligent UI will also be customizable.
Users who prefer more traditional text-based responses will be able to reduce the number of visuals that ChatGPT includes.
Rollout Starts With Paid Plans
OpenAI says Intelligent UI will roll out globally with GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users.
The feature is scheduled to reach Free and Go users on Thursday.
