Apple Partners With LG for Major Smart Home Devices

Apple has reportedly partnered with LG Electronics to develop a range of smart home products, including a video doorbell, thermostat, smart lock, temperature sensor, and several security cameras.

The products are expected to work with Apple’s long-rumored smart home hub, which is reportedly set to launch next week.

The LG-made accessories themselves are not expected for several months.

Apple Is Expanding Its Smart Home Push

Apple introduced HomeKit in 2014 as a platform for smart home accessories, but adoption remained limited compared with rival platforms from Amazon and Google.

Apple initially required HomeKit-compatible devices to include a proprietary MFi chip. It later replaced that requirement with a software-based approach in 2018 after manufacturers found the original system too restrictive.

The company is now reportedly making another major push into the smart home market.

That effort is expected to begin on October 13, when Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil a Siri AI-powered smart home hub alongside new versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV.

LG Will Manufacture and Support the Products

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple and LG worked together on the accessories, but the devices will carry the LG brand.

LG will handle manufacturing and product support.

Apple has used a similar strategy with companies such as Belkin and Logitech, allowing it to help shape product design, features, and engineering without directly manufacturing or supporting every accessory itself.

Seven LG Smart Home Products Revealed

Regulatory filings have revealed several upcoming LG products:

  • LG Video Doorbell Wired
  • LG Floodlight Cam
  • LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In
  • LG Indoor Cam Plug-In
  • LG Smart Deadbolt Lock
  • LG Smart Thermostat
  • LG Temperature Sensor

LG requested that photos and more detailed information remain confidential until early next year.

The filings do not mention Apple’s involvement.

First Images Show Smart Lock and Sensors

A leaker known as pdfu on X later shared images claiming to show the upcoming LG smart deadbolt lock, thermostat, and temperature sensor.

The source of the images has not been confirmed. According to the leaker, the smart lock uses a rotating keypad and includes a swivel pin that can limit rotation on one side to prevent it from hitting a wall.

Its settings reportedly include controls for the touchpad light ring, door-left-open audio alarm, and lock sound volume.

The lock is also said to support automatic unlocking, tap-to-unlock, emergency power, and master codes.

The temperature sensor reportedly measures both temperature and humidity. It has a magnetic rear surface for attaching to metal and also includes an adhesive-backed metal plate so it can be mounted elsewhere.

Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Support

Most of the upcoming devices are expected to support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with Thread and Matter.

Matter and Thread are designed to make smart home devices work more easily across different ecosystems.

Apple already supports both technologies on some of its devices.

Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a compatible Thread border router, such as certain HomePod mini and Apple TV models or supported third-party hardware.

Apple’s upcoming smart home products are also expected to support these standards.

Smart Lock Will Support UWB

LG’s smart deadbolt lock is also expected to support ultra-wideband, or UWB.

This could allow the lock to unlock automatically when a user approaches with a compatible device in a pocket or on a wrist.

Apple already includes UWB technology in several recent products, including iPhones, Apple Watches, HomePods, and AirTags.

The new accessories would give Apple a wider set of closely integrated smart home products while still allowing them to work across other platforms through Matter.
