The City Traffic Police Murree has formed special squads to inspect fire safety arrangements in school vans and other public service vehicles across the district.
According to a press release, the squads were formed on the directions of District Police Officer Murree Raza Tanveer Sipra and Chief Traffic Officer Murree Munir Ahmed Hashmi.
Traffic wardens have stepped up inspections on major roads and at different locations, with a particular focus on vehicles used to transport schoolchildren. Officers are checking whether fire extinguishers are available, in working condition, and within their expiry dates.
The move follows a recent school van fire incident in Murree that left 11 people injured.
Chief Traffic Officer Munir Ahmed Hashmi directed wardens to ensure there is no compromise on safety arrangements in vehicles carrying schoolchildren and other passengers. Drivers, vehicle owners, and transporters have also been instructed to keep suitable and serviceable fire extinguishers in their vehicles.
The traffic police said the first few moments are critical when a vehicle catches fire due to a short circuit, fuel leakage, or another reason. A working fire extinguisher can help contain the fire at an early stage and reduce the risk of loss of life and property until Rescue 1122 and other emergency services arrive.
School administrations, parents, transporters, and drivers have also been urged to pay close attention to the safety of vehicles used to transport children.
The department said inspections of public service and school transport vehicles will continue at different locations across Murree to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
