MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro Debuts as Its First 2nm Chip
MediaTek has officially unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first chipset manufactured on a 2nm process and the first from the company to use Arm’s latest-generation CPU and GPU designs.
The new flagship platform brings improvements to CPU performance, graphics, AI processing, memory and storage, while placing particular emphasis on power efficiency.
New Arm C2 CPU Architecture
The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses an eight-core CPU with two Arm C2-Ultra cores and six C2-Pro cores. Three of the C2-Pro cores feature 1MB of L2 cache each, while the remaining three use 512KB.
MediaTek has not revealed clock speeds yet. Compared with the Dimensity 9500, the new CPU delivers up to 17% higher single-core performance while improving single-core efficiency by 37%.
Multi-core performance is up by 15%, while efficiency improves by as much as 61%. The chip also includes 16MB of L3 cache and 10MB of system-level cache.
Faster GPU and Ray Tracing
Graphics are handled by the new Arm Mali-G2 Ultra NX GPU.
MediaTek claims up to 27% higher peak graphics performance, 18% faster ray tracing, and a 24% improvement in power efficiency.
The GPU supports gaming at more than 185fps and introduces neural graphics rendering for improved super-resolution image quality.
Major AI Upgrade
The Dimensity 9600 Pro includes MediaTek’s new NPU 1090.
Compared with the NPU 990 used in the Dimensity 9500, INT4 AI performance has doubled.
MediaTek also claims 55% better token generation per watt and 51% faster prompt pre-fill performance.
A dedicated hardware compression engine is included for managing KV cache, helping reduce the memory demands of on-device generative AI workloads.
LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 Support
The chipset supports both LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 memory, with LPDDR6 offering up to 33% higher performance.
Storage support has also been upgraded from UFS 4.1 to UFS 5.0.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.2, and a Release 17 5G modem with sub-6GHz 4×4 MIMO.
Cameras and Video
MediaTek has also tightened integration between the image signal processor and NPU, allowing AI processing to be applied directly to photos and videos.
The Dimensity 9600 Pro supports camera sensors of up to 200MP. Video recording goes up to 8K at 60fps, while the video decoding engine now adds support for VVC/H.266 alongside HEVC, AVC, VP9 and AV1.
Displays of up to WQHD+ resolution at 180Hz are supported. MediaTek says the first smartphone powered by the Dimensity 9600 Pro has already been announced, with more devices expected to follow.
The company has not yet confirmed whether a standard Dimensity 9600 will also be released.
