Italy is set to limit the number of foreign students in some school classes under new measures approved by the government.
The measure, approved by the Council of Ministers on September 24, aims to prevent excessive concentration of foreign or non-Italian-speaking students in individual classes.
Under the new rules, first-year classes can have a maximum of 30% of students who meet the criteria set for the foreign-student cap. The measure applies to certain classes where a high number of students have limited Italian language skills.
Schools will be allowed to redistribute students across classes and provide additional Italian-language support where needed. The government has said the measures are intended to improve integration and prevent the creation of isolated groups within schools.
The decree also introduces restrictions on wearing full-face coverings, including burqas and niqabs, during school activities and school-family meetings, with exceptions for health and security reasons. Parents may face fines when minors violate the face-covering rules.
The measures take effect immediately but must be approved by Parliament within 60 days to remain in force.
