President’s PhD Scholarship 2027-28
The scholarship supports students who want to carry out doctoral research at Imperial College London under the supervision of an eligible academic.
Both UK and international applicants can apply. Imperial also allows both full-time and part-time PhD candidates to compete for the scholarship.
Successful applicants can begin their PhD between August 1 and November 1, 2027.
Scholarship Benefits
Imperial will cover the full tuition fees of selected scholars for the complete 3.5-year funding period. Each scholar will also receive £27,036 per year as a living-cost stipend.
The university provides this amount to support students while they focus on their doctoral research.
Imperial will provide an additional £2,000 each year for research consumables during the first three years.
Scholars will also get access to training, development activities, and other opportunities through Imperial’s Early Career Researcher Institute.
Who Can Apply
Imperial is looking for applicants with a strong academic record and clear research potential. Candidates normally need a first-class undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification.
Applicants using a standalone Master’s degree are generally expected to have achieved a distinction.
The scholarship is open to new PhD applicants. Students who are already registered for a PhD at Imperial are not eligible.
Pakistani applicants must also meet the admission requirements of the department and PhD program they choose.
Supervisor Requirement
Applicants must first find an Imperial academic who agrees to supervise their proposed research. The research topic should match the expertise of the selected supervisor and department.
Candidates should contact potential supervisors early, as supervisor availability can affect whether an application can move forward.
Selection Process
Imperial selects candidates mainly on academic excellence and research potential. The university considers academic results, transcripts, awards, research experience, and the quality of the proposed research.
Departments may also consider interviews and other academic assessments before nominating candidates for the scholarship.
Applicants who do not receive the President’s PhD Scholarship can still be considered for a regular PhD place at Imperial.
How to Apply
There is no separate scholarship application form. Candidates must first contact an eligible Imperial academic and secure their agreement to supervise the proposed research.
After that, applicants must submit a PhD admission application through Imperial College London’s online admissions system and select the President’s PhD Scholarship option in the funding section.
The relevant department will review the application and nominate suitable candidates for scholarship consideration.
Application Deadlines
Imperial will consider applications in three rounds for the 2027-28 intake. The first deadline is November 2, 2026. Applicants in this round can expect scholarship decisions by January 31, 2027.
The second deadline is January 11, 2027, with decisions expected by April 15. The final deadline is March 1, 2027. Successful applicants in the last round are expected to receive a decision by May 31, 2027.
Students planning to apply are advised to contact potential supervisors and prepare their documents well before the relevant deadline.
