GTA V Ran in Google Chrome Without Cloud Gaming or Installation

An unofficial GTA V browser port briefly allowed users to run the game directly inside Chrome without installing the usual 100GB-plus PC version.

The project appeared on PlayGTA5.com and supported Story Mode and free roam. Reports also showed it working on some mobile devices with keyboard, controller, and touchscreen support. GTA Online was not available.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav shared the project on X and posted footage showing GTA V running inside a browser. The image attached to his post was later removed due to a copyright complaint.

The project was not released or authorized by Rockstar Games.

Running Locally Without Cloud Gaming

Technical analysis found that the project used WebAssembly and WebGPU to run GTA V locally inside the browser.

Rockstar’s RAGE engine was reportedly compiled to WebAssembly, while the game’s graphics pipeline was adapted for WebGPU.

The browser version did not reduce the full game to around 700MB.

The initial startup reportedly required about 582MB, but the site served roughly 20.9GB of game data and downloaded additional assets as players moved through Los Santos.

Uses GTA V Source Code

Analysis also indicated that the project was built from GTA V’s original C++ source code and used Rockstar game assets.

This supports claims that it may have relied on previously leaked GTA V source code, although the anonymous developers have not confirmed that.

The Site Went Offline Quickly

PlayGTA5.com stopped serving the playable game within hours of going viral.

Some reports blamed Take-Two, but Rockstar and Take-Two have not publicly confirmed issuing a takedown notice.

Archived copies have since appeared, although users have reported loading, memory, and missing-asset problems.

There is still no official browser version of GTA V from Rockstar Games.
