Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Hussain Mehdi has resigned from his position, citing continued political pressure and interference in administrative matters, particularly over the reinstatement of dismissed employees.
Dr. Mehdi has submitted his resignation to the Sindh Chief Minister and said he will continue performing his duties until it is formally accepted.
The dispute reportedly escalated during a Syndicate meeting following a heated exchange between MPA and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousuf Baloch and Associate Professor Dr. Ibrahim Noorani over the case of a dismissed employee.
Noorani later alleged in a video statement that Baloch brought a dismissed university employee, Tanveer Soomro, to the Syndicate meeting and sought the reinstatement of employees removed over alleged corruption. Baloch’s position on the allegations was not included in the information provided.
University employees have also been protesting against the registrar for the past three days, with some alleging that the registrar is affiliated with a political party. The administration has issued Noorani a show-cause notice over his video statement.
In his resignation, Dr. Mehdi said more than 15 employees had faced disciplinary action over various allegations, including claims of drug use on university premises, absenteeism, and being ghost employees.
He said the university had made progress in financial management, faculty improvement, academic activities, infrastructure, and institutional development over the past 18 months. However, he said continued protests and pressure had made it difficult for him to exercise his administrative authority effectively.
Dr. Mehdi said allowing administrative decisions to be made under employee pressure would weaken the authority of the university’s legally empowered bodies and set an inappropriate precedent.
