Bread prices have increased by 8 to 9 percent across the market after manufacturers raised rates for the second time this year, citing higher power, gas, raw material, and transportation costs.
Manufacturers had already raised prices in April after three years, citing the same pressures. Under the revised rate list, large plain bread now costs Rs270, medium bread Rs200, and small bread Rs140, up from Rs240, Rs180, and Rs130.
Bran bread has also become more expensive and now sells for Rs200 instead of Rs180. However, the price of a school bun remains unchanged at Rs25.
The price of four burger buns has risen to Rs140 from Rs130. Rusk prices have also climbed, with the small packet now selling for Rs100 and the large packet for Rs180, up from Rs90 and Rs170.
Flour prices have continued to rise for months. According to the Sensitive Price Index for the week ending September 3, the national average price of a 20kg flour bag stood at Rs2,200 to Rs3,200, while a 10kg wheat bag cost Rs1,250 and one kg of fine flour Rs155.
Traders and retailers said the government has not taken serious steps to control the upward trend in flour prices. They said wheat and flour prices have stayed unstable because the government failed to import grain in time to support the market.
Meanwhile, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan invited bids on Wednesday to import 750,000 tonnes of wheat to ease the country’s grain shortage.
