The nationwide goods transport strike has entered its seventh day, causing an estimated Rs. 50 billion loss to Pakistan’s economy, according to transporters’ chairman Muhammad Owais Chaudhry.
He said the nationwide wheel-jam strike was continuing on Independence Day as transporters pressed the government to accept their demands.
Transporters’ demands were legal and constitutional and called on the government to take practical measures to resolve the dispute. The government is holding negotiations with the transporters, but no concrete course of action has been agreed so far, the chairman added.
He said transporters would not end the strike on assurances alone and demanded implementation of measures addressing their concerns.
Chaudhry announced that the strike would continue until the government’s acceptance of the transporters’ demands and practical action to implement them.
He also said the transport community was praying for Pakistan’s progress, prosperity and a stronger economy on Independence Day.
