Students receive financial support through a combination of university fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. These funding arrangements allow doctoral candidates to gain research experience while contributing to faculty-led projects and academic activities.

Eligibility Criteria for the UBC Accounting PhD Scholarship

Applicants must meet UBC’s doctoral admission requirements and demonstrate strong academic preparation for research in accounting or related disciplines. The university generally expects a minimum academic average in the B+ range, equivalent to approximately 76% under its grading system.

Candidates typically hold a master’s degree, although UBC considers exceptional applicants with bachelor’s degrees who meet its direct doctoral admission requirements. Applicants from Pakistan must also satisfy the university’s country-specific academic qualification standards.

Previous academic study in accounting is an advantage but is not mandatory for every candidate. UBC also considers applicants with backgrounds in finance, economics, and mathematics who can demonstrate the ability to undertake advanced accounting research.

The university evaluates academic performance, research potential, letters of recommendation, and the applicant’s statement of purpose during the selection process. Candidates must also submit official GMAT or GRE scores, with UBC Sauder generally preferring the GMAT for accounting applicants.

English Language Requirements

International applicants whose previous universities did not primarily use English as the language of instruction must demonstrate English proficiency through an accepted examination.

UBC requires an IELTS Academic overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.5 in each component. Candidates submitting the Duolingo English Test must achieve an overall score of 130, with the specified minimum component scores.

For TOEFL iBT examinations taken before January 21, 2026, the minimum overall score is 100. Applicants must also achieve at least 22 in Reading and Listening, along with 21 in Writing and Speaking.

For TOEFL iBT examinations taken on or after January 21, 2026, UBC applies the revised six-point scoring system. Candidates must achieve an overall score of 5.0, with at least 4.5 in Reading and Writing, 4.0 in Speaking, and 5.0 in Listening.

Required Documents

Applicants must prepare their academic documents and supporting materials before submitting an online application. UBC requires academic transcripts and degree certificates from all previous post-secondary institutions, along with three recommendation letters.

Candidates must also submit a statement of intent explaining their academic goals, research interests, and reasons for choosing the UBC Sauder PhD program. The university recommends a statement of approximately two to three pages.

Applicants should provide an updated curriculum vitae detailing their education, professional experience, academic achievements, and relevant research activities.
