Electricity prices could increase by Rs. 2.52 per unit for one month as the Central Power Purchasing Agency has sought an adjustment from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority for July’s fuel costs.
The CPPA has filed a request with NEPRA under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment mechanism. The regulator has scheduled a public hearing on the request for August 27.
According to the request, the cost of electricity generated from diesel reached Rs. 50 per unit in July. Power generated from imported coal cost Rs. 54.47 per unit, while electricity produced using imported liquefied natural gas cost Rs. 47.37 per unit.
If approved, the requested adjustment would increase electricity charges by Rs. 2.52 per unit for the applicable billing period. The final impact on consumers will depend on NEPRA’s decision following the scheduled hearing.
The Fuel Price Adjustment reflects changes in the cost of fuel used by power generation companies and is periodically passed through to consumers after regulatory review.
NEPRA will examine the CPPA’s request at the August 27 hearing before deciding whether to approve the proposed Rs. 2.52 per unit adjustment.
