Doctor Fails to Answer Whether Men Can Get Pregnant

A US obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) recently failed to give a direct yes-or-no answer when Republican Senator Josh Hawley repeatedly asked whether men can become pregnant during a Senate hearing on abortion medication.

It led to a tense exchange over biology, gender identity and medical terminology. The news went viral on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

The exchange took place during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing focused on chemical abortion drugs. Hawley questioned Dr. Nisha Verma, an OB-GYN who was testifying before the committee, about whether men can become pregnant.

Verma did not directly answer the question. Instead, she said she treats patients with different identities and questioned the purpose behind framing the issue as a binary yes-or-no question.

Hawley pressed her for a clear answer, saying he was asking about biological facts rather than identity/gender dysphoria. He argued that the distinction was relevant to scientific, legal and public-policy discussions surrounding abortion.

The doctor maintained that such questions can be used as political tools and said medical care involves patients with different identities.

The exchange continued for several minutes before clips of the confrontation spread widely on social media.
