A wildlife department team has arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the online trade of rare Indian flapshell turtles in Lahore’s Shalimar tehsil and recovered one turtle from his possession.
Officials said the Indian flapshell turtle is a freshwater species found in South Asia. Its name comes from the femoral flaps on its plastron, which help protect its limbs when it retracts into its shell.
Police registered an FIR against the suspect at Baghbanpura police station.
In a separate action, authorities registered another FIR against a suspect accused of bird netting in Lahore’s Cantonment tehsil, while wildlife staff also fined an illegal bird hunter Rs20,000 in Chunian.
Bahawalnagar Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Urooj Zaheer arrested two illegal hunters of wild pigeons and recovered an air gun from them. Officials said the hunters were fined Rs40,000.
In Minchinabad tehsil, a team conducting a raid under a search warrant recovered four wild parrots, one Raa parrot and one grey francolin. Police registered an FIR against the accused.
In Rajanpur, Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Saima Mohsin led a team that recovered two netting devices used to trap quails and started legal proceedings against the suspects.
In another operation, Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Mirza Abid Hussain arrested two people involved in the illegal trade of wild birds and imposed a Rs90,000 fine.
Meanwhile, at Kallar Kahar, authorities retrieved 174 kanals and 17 marlas of land allocated for the Wildlife Line Kallar Kahar, Command and Control Centre, Salt Range and Wildlife Protection Centre from illegal occupants.
