Solar Owners Don’t Trust Grid Anymore, Battery Imports Up 220% in One Year
Pakistan’s rapid expansion in distributed solar generation is driving higher demand for battery energy storage systems, with industry estimates showing imports of battery storage systems increased by 220 percent in 2025.
Trina Solar says Pakistan’s growing solar base is increasing interest in combining solar generation with battery storage, particularly for utility-scale projects as well as commercial and industrial microgrids.
Research by Ember and Renewables First estimates Pakistan now has around 38GW of distributed solar capacity installed across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed solar markets.
According to Renewables First, the country imported approximately 4.6 GWh of battery energy storage systems in 2025, more than tripling imports recorded a year earlier.
Energy experts note that battery storage can complement existing solar installations by allowing excess electricity generated during the day to be used later. However, the performance and economic benefits depend on the design, operating profile and energy requirements of each facility.
Retrofitting battery storage into existing solar systems also requires technical assessments covering electrical infrastructure, inverter compatibility, demand patterns, energy management systems and compliance with relevant international safety standards.
One commonly used approach is AC-coupled storage, which allows batteries to operate alongside existing solar installations through a separate power conversion system, reducing the need for major changes to the original solar infrastructure. Compatibility, however, must still be evaluated for each project.
Trina Storage, the energy storage business of Trinasolar, said it is working with engineering, procurement and construction partners to assess system compatibility and develop storage solutions based on the technical and commercial requirements of individual projects.
The company said it has supplied more than 500MW of 700W plus solar modules for commercial, industrial and residential projects in Pakistan and recently introduced its Vertex N G3 760W module series.
Globally, Trina Storage was established in 2015 and says it has maintained BloombergNEF Tier 1 Energy Storage Manufacturer status for ten consecutive quarters.
The company expects its cumulative battery storage shipments to exceed 30 GWh in the first half of 2026 and recently introduced its 6.25MWh Elementa 3 storage platform for large-scale energy storage projects.
