PTA Chairman Says Starlink Can’t Launch in Pakistan Until It Meets 4 Conditions
Starlink and other satellite internet services must fulfill four conditions before they can launch in Pakistan, Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman said during a Senate committee meeting on Monday.
PTA Chairman told the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that four to five satellite internet companies have expressed interest in providing services in Pakistan.
He said a satellite internet company must first obtain approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
The company must then obtain a license from the Pakistan Space Regulatory Board and secure approval from the Ministry of Interior.
Once these three requirements are completed, the matter will be sent to PTA for further processing.
PTA chairman said no satellite internet case is currently pending before the authority, as the Pakistan Space Regulatory Board is still working on the regulatory framework.
He said the regulatory framework must be completed before satellite internet companies can receive licenses to operate in Pakistan.
The chairman also revealed that Starlink had approached PTA for a license in February 2022.
The committee was briefed on the continued delay in launching Starlink and other satellite internet services in Pakistan.
