Pakistan Test debutant Razaullah smashed eight sixes against England’s fast bowlers at Edgbaston, achieving in one innings what no Pakistani batter had managed across an entire Test career in the previous 15 years.
The 21-year-old produced the remarkable feat during his explosive 81-run knock in the third and final Test in Birmingham. No Pakistani batter during that 15-year period had reached eight Test sixes against pace across their entire career.
Razaullah targeted England’s fast bowlers throughout his innings. He hit Gus Atkinson for four sixes, Jofra Archer for three and Josh Tongue for one, while his ninth six came against part-time spinner Dan Lawrence.
Batting at No. 9, Razaullah finished with 81 off just 63 deliveries, including four fours and nine sixes. His counterattack came with Pakistan facing the threat of an innings defeat after conceding a massive 320-run first-innings deficit.
The nine sixes also put Razaullah level with New Zealand’s Tim Southee for the most sixes in an innings by a player on Test debut. Southee struck nine against England at Napier in 2008.
Razaullah also equaled Ben Stokes’ record for the most sixes in a Test innings played in England. Stokes hit nine against Australia at Lord’s during the 2023 Ashes.
The Pakistani youngster added another record by reaching his half-century in just 43 balls, becoming the fastest Pakistani to score a fifty on Test debut. He surpassed Faheem Ashraf, who reached the milestone in 52 balls against Ireland in 2018.
His 81 was also the highest score by a Pakistani on Test debut while batting at No. 9 or lower, surpassing Rashid Khan’s 59 from the No. 10 position against Sri Lanka.
Razaullah then combined with Mohammad Abbas for a crucial 121-run ninth-wicket partnership. Abbas contributed a career-best 42 as the pair helped Pakistan recover and eventually post 449 in their second innings, setting England a target of 130.
Razaullah’s batting heroics capped an impressive all-round Test debut after he had already taken four wickets in England’s first innings. His late assault helped Pakistan avoid an innings defeat and take the match into the fourth day.
