The Senate Standing Committee on Communications has raised serious concerns over alleged corruption in the motorway system, particularly in toll collection in Sindh, along with prolonged deputation postings.
The committee, chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid, was told that the National Highways and Motorway Police has a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and that disciplinary action had been taken against 178 officers in Sindh.
During the meeting, Senator Saifullah Abro questioned the continued posting of officials on deputation. 331 officials had already completed their deputation periods.
Abro said officials could not remain on deputation for more than five years and questioned why some personnel continued to serve after completing their permitted tenure.
He also raised concerns over the outsourcing of toll collection in Sindh to a private company and alleged that some individuals were involved in corruption.
The committee also examined the case of an individual who retired in July 2025 but was still serving.
Officials told the committee that the matter was related to a dispute over the individual’s date of birth and that he had obtained a court stay order. Abro said a High Court inquiry committee had directed action in the case.
The committee also reviewed the Naigaj Dam project, with Abro highlighting a sharp increase in its estimated cost from the original Rs. 12 billion to Rs. 45 billion and later Rs. 85 billion.
The committee directed the relevant authorities to address concerns regarding alleged corruption, toll collection and prolonged deputation postings in the motorway system.
