A nurse who risked her own life to rescue a newborn from the devastating fire at Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has been hailed as a national hero, with her bravery also receiving international attention.
The Washington Post has highlighted the extraordinary bravery of PIMS nurse Razia Noreen. The prominent American newspaper published an Associated Press report on Noreen’s rescue, describing how she ran into the burning nursery and emerged just eight seconds later carrying a newborn in her arms.
The report noted that Noreen tried to return to the nursery to save the remaining babies but was forced back by the intense flames and thick smoke. The baby she rescued was the sole survivor of the fire, which claimed the lives of 14 other newborns.
Noreen has since been hailed as a national hero across Pakistan. The government has announced that she will receive the Sitara-i-Khidmat, or Star of Service, along with a financial reward in recognition of her bravery.
Speaking about the rescue, Noreen said she did not enter the burning nursery for recognition or a reward. She described her actions as the duty of a nurse and a mother.
She said her only mission was to save the babies and that she did not think about her own safety when she entered the fire.
The nurse has also expressed deep sorrow over the 14 newborns she could not save. She said the tragedy had left her traumatized and emotionally devastated.
