Microsoft is making a major change to how Windows 11 apps are developed, with the company now building its WinUI framework openly on GitHub.
The move gives developers and users a public view of Microsoft’s work on the technology used to create modern Windows 11 interfaces.
Microsoft says its main WinUI development now takes place on GitHub, where developers can follow new code, changes, reviews and updates as they happen.
WinUI is designed around the Windows 11 look, including Fluent Design, rounded corners, dark mode, modern animations and other interface improvements.
The company has been gradually using WinUI in parts of Windows 11, including Settings, the Microsoft Store, Notifications and parts of File Explorer. Microsoft is also working to replace older Windows interfaces with newer designs.
The shift comes after years in which Microsoft and other developers increasingly used web-based technologies to build Windows apps.
Some of these apps can use much more memory and system resources than users expect. Microsoft has faced similar complaints over applications such as Teams and Weather.
The renewed WinUI effort does not mean every Windows app will change immediately. Some major Microsoft products, including Teams and the new Outlook, still rely heavily on web tech.
