Xiaomi Reveals Official Details of Upcoming Poco F9 Series

Poco has officially confirmed the chipsets powering its upcoming Poco F9 Pro and Poco F9 Ultra, removing one of the remaining uncertainties ahead of their September 1 global launch.

The Poco F9 Ultra will use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while the Poco F9 Pro will feature Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series.

The two phones are the global versions of China’s Redmi K100 Pro lineup, with the Redmi K100 Pro becoming the Poco F9 Pro and the Redmi K100 Pro Max becoming the Poco F9 Ultra.

Poco F9 Ultra Keeps Last Year’s Flagship Chip

The F9 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was previously revealed through a Geekbench listing, but Poco has now confirmed it officially.

However, this means there is no chipset upgrade over the Poco F8 Ultra, which already used the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

It remains a flagship 3nm processor with Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon CPU and Adreno graphics.

Poco F9 Pro Gets Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-Series

The more interesting upgrade comes with the Poco F9 Pro.

Instead of using the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, Poco has chosen the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series (SM8850-1-AB).

The V-series retains essentially the same flagship CPU configuration as the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 but uses a reduced GPU.

Its Adreno 840 GPU has eight compute units instead of 12, making it roughly 33% smaller. On-chip graphics memory is also reduced from 18MB to 12MB.

The GPU still runs at 1.2GHz, while the CPU retains much of the performance of the full flagship chip.

This means the V-series sits between Qualcomm’s regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and the full Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in overall positioning.

Bigger Upgrade for the F9 Pro

The previous Poco F8 Pro used the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Qualcomm’s 2024 flagship processor.

Moving to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series therefore represents a more meaningful generational upgrade for the F9 Pro than the Ultra receives this year.

Compared with the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, the V-series also offers a faster CPU, while its reduced GPU configuration puts graphics performance much closer to that of the non-Elite chip.

Poco has already revealed the Aurora Green F9 Pro and Dark Cherry F9 Ultra ahead of launch.

The full Poco F9 series will be unveiled globally on September 1, when Poco will announce the remaining specifications, pricing, and regional availability.
