Suzuki Unveils New Electric Car With 310-Kilometer Range

Suzuki has unveiled the e-Sky, its first electric kei car, a category of small, lightweight vehicles designed primarily for city driving in Japan.

Efficiency and Range

Suzuki designed the e-Sky around energy efficiency and low weight. The electric kei car uses a 26 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and offers a projected range of 310 kilometers.

The e-Sky consumes around 12 kilometers per kilowatt hour, making it one of the most energy efficient mini EVs. Suzuki achieved the efficiency by developing a lightweight vehicle platform specifically for kei EVs.

Compact Design

The e-Sky measures 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,625 mm tall, keeping it within Japan’s kei car dimensions. Suzuki opted for a lower roof than the taller mini EVs offered by some rivals. The company said it designed the vehicle with potential overseas markets in mind.

Electric Powertrain

The e-Sky features Suzuki’s first in-house designed e-axle drive system. The company focused on keeping the system compact rather than prioritizing high performance.

Suzuki developed the vehicle platform specifically for kei EVs and placed the battery beneath the floor to improve aerodynamics while maintaining a lightweight structure.

Charging and Features

The e-Sky supports DC fast charging at up to 50 kW, allowing the battery to reach 80% in about 25 minutes. A full AC charge takes around eight hours with a 3 kW charger and about four and a half hours with a 6 kW charger. The EV also features a heat pump, one pedal driving and bidirectional charging.

Interior

The cabin features a digital instrument cluster and a 10.1 inch touchscreen, along with a heated steering wheel and electronic parking brake. Suzuki has added practical storage solutions, including a two-level center console and a tray with a built-in cup holder on the passenger side.

Price

Suzuki has not announced the e-Sky’s price yet. The company said it focused on offering an affordable vehicle with strong efficiency. The e-Sky will initially go on sale in Japan in November.
