21 Cricket Legends Urge PM Shehbaz to Ensure Imran Khan Gets Court-Ordered Medical Care
Twenty-one former international cricket captains have renewed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan receives the medical treatment ordered by the Supreme Court.
The former cricketers raised concerns over the handling of Khan’s medical assessment after the Supreme Court ordered on August 18 that he be transferred from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for examination and treatment.
Instead, Khan was taken to PIMS, where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a team including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician examined Khan and declared him medically fit.
The former captains said in a letter to the prime minister that Khan remained at the hospital for only a few hours before being returned to jail. They argued that a court-directed medical board, including Khan’s personal doctors and sister Dr. Uzma Khan, should be allowed to complete its assessment.
They urged the government to ensure an independent medical examination, particularly regarding reported vision loss in Khan’s right eye. They also called for uninterrupted weekly family visits and immediate implementation of any treatment recommended by the medical board.
The signatories include Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, Arjuna Ranatunga, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
The appeal follows a similar letter from 14 former captains in February expressing concern over Khan’s health.
