Two Pakistan-flagged oil tankers carrying Saudi crude oil have safely crossed the Red Sea and the Bab al Mandeb Strait despite the Houthis’ blockade targeting Saudi-linked shipping, according to maritime intelligence company Windward.
The Aframax crude tankers loaded cargo at Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu port before returning to Pakistan with their automatic identification systems switched on throughout the voyage, Windward said.
The transit comes after the Houthis announced a blockade against Saudi Arabia on July 20.
Since then, Saudi-linked tankers, except those associated with China, have either come under attack or diverted their routes around the Cape of Good Hope, according to the maritime intelligence firm.
The successful crossings also followed a warning by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, which said any attack on a Pakistan-flagged vessel would be treated as a threat to the country’s security.
The Bab al Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
