WhatsApp Now Lets Anyone Join Calls Without an Account
WhatsApp is officially rolling out guest calls, allowing people to join a WhatsApp call even if they do not have an account.
Guests can join directly from a web browser without downloading the app or creating an account. WhatsApp says the calls are free, have no time limit, and remain protected with end-to-end encryption.
How Guest Calls Work
Only users with a WhatsApp account can create a call link. To do this, users can open the Calls tab, tap the “+” button, and create a call link. That link can then be shared with anyone.
A guest simply opens the link in a browser, enters their name, and joins a waiting room. The host must manually approve every guest before they can enter the call.
Guest calls support both individual and group calls with up to 32 participants.
Guests Get Most Calling Features
Guests can use several of the same features available during normal WhatsApp calls.
They can share their screen, react with emojis, and raise their hand during a call.
However, guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages during the call or invite additional people.
The host can remove guests at any time or end the call for everyone.
Calls Remain End-to-End Encrypted
WhatsApp says guest calls still support end-to-end encryption.
The web client creates a unique identifier used to encrypt the call, allowing guests to participate without having a normal WhatsApp account.
Calendar Integration Is Coming
WhatsApp is also working on integrations with Google Calendar and Outlook.
Users will eventually be able to add WhatsApp call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin.
People receiving those invitations will be able to join the meeting even if they do not have a WhatsApp account. WhatsApp says this feature is expected later this year.
Gradual Rollout
Guest calls are rolling out to users on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS.
The rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear for everyone immediately.
WhatsApp has not provided a date for when the feature will be available to all users.
