WhatsApp Web is finally getting one of its most requested features: the ability to make and receive voice and video calls directly from a browser, without installing the desktop app.
The feature supports both one-on-one and group calls. WhatsApp says calls made through the web remain end-to-end encrypted, have no time limits, and are free to use.
Direct Calls
WhatsApp Web now supports screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab showing call history and favorite contacts alongside the new calling feature.
This means users on shared computers or work laptops where apps cannot be installed can make calls without leaving the browser.
Move Calls Between Devices
WhatsApp is also adding Call Transfer, which lets users move an active group call between devices without ending it.
For example, a call started on a phone or tablet can be moved to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, and vice versa.
Other Upgrades
Call links now have an optional “Require approval to join” setting. When enabled, participants enter a waiting room and cannot join until the host approves them.
WhatsApp is also adding noise suppression to reduce background sounds during calls. Users can control the feature through the in-call settings.
A new feature called QuickHD is designed to provide HD video quality within the first few seconds of a video call instead of gradually improving after the call begins.
WhatsApp says all of these features are rolling out gradually, so some users may not see them immediately, but they should become available to everyone soon.
