Pakistan’s used vehicle imports have surged by 4,642 percent after changes to import rules, with 2,276 used vehicles entering the country in September 2026 compared with just 48 in May, government sources told ProPakistani.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting on Wednesday to review the rising imports of used vehicles through commercial and gift schemes.
The meeting was briefed on the latest import figures and the impact of the increase on the local automobile industry. Sources said provisions related to used vehicle imports will be included in the new Auto Policy.
Local car manufacturers have raised concerns that a continued increase in used vehicle imports could reduce the market share of locally assembled vehicles.
Meanwhile importers said that greater availability of used vehicles would increase competition and give consumers more options.
The government is expected to consider both sides while finalizing rules for used vehicle imports under the new Auto Policy.
