The iPhone Duo could be boosting Samsung Galaxy foldable sales

Samsung says its foldable phones are selling like hotcakes, and if you read between the lines, Apple might be one big reason why.
People may not be camping out in front of Samsung stores like they are for the just-released iPhone Duo, but it’s been a good year for folding phones.
In a blog post, Samsung UK boasted about high sales for its Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra devices in Europe since they launched in August. According to Samsung, the devices have seen a 45 percent boost in sales compared to a year ago. That’s especially notable because global smartphone sales overall are at their lowest level in 14 years.
Also of note, Samsung said there’s been a 260 percent increase in Google search interest in Samsung foldable devices between Sept. 6 and 12, which happens to line up perfectly with the announcement of the iPhone Duo.
The truth about iPhone Duo problems: The shoddy-looking apps, FaceTime camera, and the hinge
Of course, we only have circumstantial evidence that Apple’s new foldable is juicing interest in Samsung’s devices, so take it with a small grain of salt. But it is generally true that Apple has a way of taking something that already exists, repackaging it with Apple slickness, and thus making it “cool” to a general audience. It is possible that’s happening with foldables as we speak.
If Apple can convince people to happily spend $2,000 on a smartphone, that would be a really impressive magic trick.
