The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada has opened applications for its funded master’s degree program, offering Pakistani and other international students a minimum annual financial support package of CAD 32,500.
The university is accepting applications for its Master of Science (MSc) in Cell and Developmental Biology, a research-based graduate program offered at its Vancouver campus.
According to UBC’s official website, students admitted to the program will receive financial support for at least two years. Research supervisors generally continue funding until students complete their degrees, provided they maintain satisfactory academic performance.
The university is accepting applications for its May and September 2027 intakes. Pakistani students interested in the September intake must apply by March 31, 2027, while the deadline for May admission is November 30, 2026.

UBC Master’s Scholarship Benefits and Financial Support
The University of British Columbia provides a minimum funding package of CAD 32,500 per year for at least two years to students enrolled in its MSc Cell and Developmental Biology program.
According to the university, financial support generally continues until degree completion if students maintain satisfactory academic progress and good standing.
Funding can come from several sources, including university scholarships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships. Research supervisors must commit to supporting students financially during their studies.
Students who receive additional scholarships may qualify for higher funding packages under the university’s scholarship arrangements.
However, UBC requires students to pay their tuition fees from their annual funding. The minimum CAD 32,500 package does not come with a separate automatic full tuition waiver.
The university currently lists annual tuition for international students at approximately CAD 10,081.65, subject to future adjustments.
Eligible international students can also receive an International Tuition Award of CAD 3,200 per year, which reduces their tuition expenses. Students must cover their remaining tuition and living costs from their available funding.
The program therefore provides a funded route to graduate study, but applicants should calculate their expected expenses before accepting an admission offer.
Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani Students
Pakistani students can apply for the MSc Cell and Developmental Biology program if they meet the academic requirements set by the University of British Columbia.
According to UBC’s country-specific admission guidelines, applicants from Pakistan generally need a recognised four-year bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification with first-class or first-division academic standing.
The university does not consider a standalone two-year bachelor’s pass degree sufficient for graduate admission. It evaluates some academic qualifications individually to determine whether applicants meet its requirements.
The program welcomes graduates from biological and life sciences backgrounds. Students with qualifications in related fields, including chemistry, mathematics, and computational modelling, can also apply if their research interests match those of a faculty supervisor.
UBC generally expects applicants to have strong academic records. Its graduate admission requirements commonly refer to a minimum average in the B+ range, although the university also applies country-specific qualification standards.
Candidates must also obtain a firm commitment from a research supervisor before applying. Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission.
English Language Requirements for UBC Scholarships
Pakistani applicants must demonstrate English-language proficiency unless they qualify for an exemption under the university’s admission rules.
The University of British Columbia accepts IELTS Academic, TOEFL, and the Duolingo English Test for this program.
For IELTS Academic, applicants must achieve an overall score of at least 6.5, with no component below 6.0.
For the Duolingo English Test, the university requires an overall score of at least 125, alongside the applicable individual component scores.
The university also accepts TOEFL scores. Applicants who took the test before January 21, 2026, must have an overall score of at least 90 under the previous 120-point system. Under the newer six-point scoring system, the overall minimum is 4.5, with additional section requirements.
UBC may exempt students who completed their previous university education primarily in English. However, graduate programs can still request language test results when necessary.
The university does not require GRE scores for the MSc Cell and Developmental Biology program.
Documents Required for UBC Master’s Admission
Candidates must prepare their academic documents and supporting information before applying for admission.
The university requires academic transcripts from all previous post-secondary studies. Applicants must also submit two reference letters from individuals who can assess their academic abilities and suitability for graduate research.
Candidates should be prepared to explain their research interests, academic background and reasons for pursuing the master’s program. They must also provide any statement or additional documents requested by the department’s application system.
Applicants whose qualifications require verification must provide the relevant academic records. Students who need an English-language test must submit valid results that meet the university’s requirements.
International candidates should review UBC’s document submission guidelines carefully before completing the online application.
How to Apply for UBC Fully-Funded Master’s Scholarships
Interested Pakistani students must apply through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admission system.
Before applying, candidates must review the research areas offered by the Cell and Developmental Biology program and identify faculty members working in their fields of interest.
Students should contact potential research supervisors to discuss available research opportunities and their academic backgrounds.
UBC requires applicants to obtain a firm commitment from a supervisor before submitting their admission applications.
Once a supervisor agrees to support their application, candidates can complete the online form, provide their academic information, and upload the required documents.
Applicants must also arrange two reference letters and pay the application fee.
The university currently charges CAD 168.25 as the application fee for international applicants.
After submission, the university will evaluate candidates according to their academic qualifications, research interests, supporting documents, and the availability of supervision.
Successful candidates will need to complete the relevant Canadian study permit requirements before beginning their studies.
Research Opportunities at the University of British Columbia
The MSc Cell and Developmental Biology program provides advanced training in the cellular and molecular processes involved in the growth and development of living organisms.
Students examine areas such as cell division, gene regulation, molecular interactions, tissue formation, and biological mechanisms associated with health and disease.
The program combines academic courses with original research. Students work under faculty supervision and develop laboratory techniques, scientific reasoning, data analysis, and research communication skills.
UBC’s Cell and Developmental Biology program has nearly 50 faculty members involved in research across different biological and biomedical disciplines.
Research opportunities are available through the university’s Life Sciences Institute and affiliated research facilities.
Graduates can pursue further studies at the doctoral level or seek opportunities in scientific research, biotechnology, biomedical science, and related sectors.
