Stray Dog Bite Kills 11-Year-Old in Sindh

An 11-year-old boy has died of rabies in Hyderabad after a stray dog bite that went untreated for months, the Sindh Health Department confirmed.

The child died during treatment at Civil Hospital (Liaquat University Hospital) in Hyderabad. According to the department, a dog bit him on the arm about two months ago, but he did not tell his family, so he never received timely anti-rabies vaccination.

Rabies symptoms appeared four days before he was brought to the hospital. District Health Officer Dr Pir Ghulam Hussain said the boy, identified as Inam and a resident of Latifabad, was first taken to Jinnah Hospital in Karachi, where doctors confirmed rabies, and was then transferred to Liaquat University Hospital on October 13.

With his death, the number of children killed by dog bites in Hyderabad district this year has risen to four, health officials said. The case adds to Sindh’s rising rabies death toll, which health monitors have put near 40 fatalities province-wide in 2026.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Doctors stress that rabies is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear, but it is preventable if wounds are cleaned and vaccines are given soon after a bite. Anyone bitten or scratched by a dog should wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek urgent medical care.

Earlier this month, Sindh recorded another rabies death linked to a dog bite in Tharparkar, underscoring gaps in timely post-exposure treatment across the province.
