The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is receiving around 500 complaints related to social media every day, according to PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman.
He shared the figure during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan on September 24.
The chairman said the regulator receives complaints involving different social media platforms, while also acknowledging that many issues may go unreported or unidentified.
PTA handles complaints by reviewing the material and seeking action from the relevant platforms. The regulator has previously said a substantial portion of flagged content is removed after requests are sent to technology companies.
During Thursday’s meeting, lawmakers also raised concerns over offensive material circulating online and pressed for stronger safeguards for younger users.
The discussion reflects the growing volume of content-related complaints being handled by Pakistan’s telecom regulator as social media use continues to expand across the country.
