ChatGPT Free Tier Gets Unlimited Chats and GPT-5.6 Luna
OpenAI is removing automatic model switching for ChatGPT’s free and Go users and will soon give them unlimited text chats. The company will also make GPT-5.6 Luna the default model for both tiers.
The switch to GPT-5.6 Luna is expected to happen sometime this week. The model is the smallest of the three GPT-5.6 models released in July and will replace GPT-5.5 Instant for free and Go users.
Unlimited text chats will become available next week. At the same time, OpenAI will introduce a new Think button for free and Go users, giving them more control over how much reasoning ChatGPT uses when generating a response.
Despite the removal of text-chat limits, restrictions will remain for other features. Free and Go users will still face limits when uploading files and generating images.
GPT-5.6 Sol Upgrades
OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol, its flagship model available to Plus and Pro subscribers.
The company says the updated model is designed to provide more direct answers, use tighter formatting, and avoid unnecessary detail. For simple questions, it should provide a direct response with the relevant context. For more complex tasks such as planning and research, OpenAI says it will provide a fuller answer while keeping the main recommendation clear.
OpenAI also says the new GPT-5.6 Sol is designed to make fewer factual mistakes, particularly with numbers, dates, sources, rules and assumptions.
According to an internal OpenAI evaluation involving financial, medical and legal prompts that required factual accuracy, responses containing at least one factual error were about 68% less common with the new GPT-5.6 Sol than with GPT-5.5 Instant.
Think Button Expands to Paid Users
The Think feature will also be available to Plus and Pro subscribers, but with more control than on the free and Go tiers.
For these users, the Think button will work as a slider ranging from “instant” to “pro” levels of reasoning while maintaining the same tone and style.
OpenAI says users can keep the setting low for everyday questions and increase it for tasks such as planning, research, writing, coding, and decisions that require more consideration.
ChatGPT Work and Codex Models Unchanged
The GPT-5.6 Sol update will not apply to the version of the model powering ChatGPT Work and Codex.
OpenAI says the new GPT-5.6 Sol is optimized for everyday conversations. As a result, the updated version will only be available in the Chat experience.
The changes will roll out in stages, with GPT-5.6 Luna arriving for free and Go users this week, followed by unlimited text chats and the new Think button next week.
