Sindh Seeks China’s Help for Karachi Flood Warning System

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has proposed a partnership with Huawei to develop a flood early warning and city operations system for Karachi, starting with a pilot project in one district.

The proposal came during his visit to Huawei’s digital urban governance facility in Wuhan, China, where he led a high-level provincial delegation.

Shah said Karachi could use data-driven technology to improve flood forecasting, emergency response, traffic management, water services, and waste disposal. The proposed pilot would initially cover one district before expanding to other parts of the city.

He emphasized that Sindh wanted a long-term partnership involving technology transfer, staff training, and local expertise, rather than simply buying equipment and software.

The chief minister also proposed study visits for provincial officials to the Wuhan City Operation Centre and collaboration between Huawei and Sindh’s universities and technical institutions.

During a separate visit to the Wuhan Artificial Intelligence Computing Center, Shah sought cooperation on AI training and access to computing resources for universities and researchers in Sindh.

The provincial government plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Huawei at the Sindh Investment and Trade Conference in Shanghai later this week.

Shah also invited Humanwell Healthcare Group to explore pharmaceutical manufacturing in Sindh, including joint ventures to produce medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
