Sindh Orders Probe into Faulty Medical Equipment at Karachi Hospitals

The Sindh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has ordered an investigation after discovering that essential diagnostic machines remained out of service for years at several Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) hospitals.

During a meeting chaired by Nisar Khuhro, audit officials revealed that X-ray, ultrasound, ECG, and other medical equipment were not functioning at Sobhraj Maternity Hospital and other KMC-run facilities.

The medical superintendent of Sobhraj Hospital confirmed that its X-ray machine remained out of order from 2022 to 2025 and was only recently repaired.

Khuhro questioned why KMC had failed to arrange funds to repair a single X-ray machine for three years despite the Sindh government’s allocation of billions of rupees for free healthcare services.

Committee member Taha Ahmed said the prolonged breakdown of diagnostic equipment had caused serious difficulties for patients, allegedly forcing many to seek services from private laboratories.

He also highlighted similar problems across Sindh, where expensive equipment, including MRI machines, remained faulty or unused due to a shortage of technical staff.

The committee directed the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team (CMIT) to investigate non-functional X-ray, CT scan, ultrasound, MRI, and ECG machines at KMC hospitals and other healthcare facilities across Sindh. The team was instructed to submit its findings within one month.

KMC Municipal Commissioner Abrar Ahmed Jafar informed the committee that 13 hospitals were operating under the corporation. He also said the mayor was personally visiting hospitals to ensure that healthcare services were being provided.
